10.2 The Effective Use of Willpower for Dieting

A. Willpower in Dieting

Traditional

Food consumption is another category, where the Deviation needs to be minimized in order to maintain a stable weight. A common sense strategy for losing weight is to eat less. Unfortunately in our modern world many of our citizens want instant gratification. They want to be instantly skinny. Thus the implication of this combination of desires is to stop eating until one has reached their ideal weight or practically speaking to eat as little as possible to remain alive. Thus some weight loss programs focus upon losing a whole lot of weight in a short amount of time. Their success is based upon how much weight is lost in the shortest amount of time. It has been found that while the weight comes off quickly it goes back on just as quickly after the weight loss program has been discontinued, and more. Hence there is a group of dieters whose weight fluctuates up to 40 pounds or more in their dieting cycles. This has also been found to be an unhealthy pattern, especially because the dieters tend to put on more in the up cycle than they lose in the down cycle. All is lost. Pass another chocolate clair.

Counter-intuitive consumption

Not really. If we detach ourselves from instant gratification, then we can still eat less but just a little less, regularly. According to the theory developed in these Notebooks, the size of the Deviation represents the potential for change, positive or negative. Hence when one loses a lot of weight quickly, one increases the potential for consumption as well as losing weight. Hence when the Splash effect occurs one has increased their ability to eat a whole lot.

Extreme vs. Moderate Diet

XN is the data, X-bar is the average, and X-Circle is the Deviation. Let us begin with our subject at 140 pounds, while her ideal weight is 115 pounds. She wants to lose 25 pounds. At the start of the study she eats between 3000 to 3500 calories a day. She burns about 2500 calories per day

Consequences of Rapid & Extreme Weight Loss

Note in the extreme diet that the amount consumed, signified by the circled numbers, is immediately outside the Realm of Probability, i.e. Z-score >2. This drives the average down rapidly, which is the hoped for objective. Unfortunately the Realm of Probability naturally increases. This determines the potential for consumption. Because the potential for consumption increases, when the consumption pendulum swings the other way, which it inevitably does – due to the Splash phenomenon – the individuals potential for consumption grows. They eat significantly more – gaining back all the weight they lost & more, as signified by the rise in average associated with Data Points 6, 7, 8 & 9 in the Extreme Diet Diagram.

Benefits of Gradual & Moderate Weight Loss

Conversely with the slow or Moderate Diet Program (shown in the diagram on the right): While the weight loss is not as great, the Bounce of the Splash is not so great either. Consequently there is a net loss in weight ultimately. Further when the pendulum swings down again the individual is in position to lose some more weight – gradually. Care must be taken to mitigate each of these weight drops, as to not expand the potential for change. Or with the next Splash the weight could bounce right back up because the potential for change in consumption has also increased.

B. The Splash Principle & the Bounce Phenomenon

The Splash Principle w/the Bounce Phenomenon is part of Directional Theory. It has to do with the Bounce of the higher Directionals after the Emptiness hits. The Average begins to fall; the Deviation rises and then falls. However the Directionals begin falling more rapidly initially – goes negative – but then hits bottom and Bounces back up above the line. At first the higher Directionals, i.e. the Data Stream Derivatives, aid the stopping. But then, at a specific point, they provide an impulse to resume the action or behavior. This is the mechanism that gives the pendulum swing, which can be pushed.

Strategy

When all the Derivatives are going down, all the momentum is also headed in the same direction. Dont fight these urges with the Will – takes too much energy. Instead bide your time – waiting for the pendulum to swing in the other direction. As with a swing, damp the negative urges, but wait until the swing changes direction to push in a positive direction. The urges of the Bouncing Directional will get more ever insistent, until the behavioral synapses fire spontaneously.

To succeed Will must take advantage of the Bounce

Hence taking advantage of the Bounce of the Directionals is essential to the success of Will. Both are weak forces and need each other to yield maximum impact. If Will is fighting all the Data Stream Derivatives it takes far more Energy associated with the Force needed to change the Data Stream Momentum – DSM. If however Will is aided by the impulses of the higher Directionals then he doesnt have to use his minimal power to fight but instead has the Urges necessary to aid his Quest. He pushes at the Right Time and is able to achieve his goal – directing the Sun to rise at Dawn rather than to reverse directions at Sunset.

Implications for Dieting

In terms of Dieting this has several implications.

1) Start the diet at the right time.

2) Slow the initial descent rather than speeding it up, which is the natural inclination. This, of course, is a counterintuitive application of Will. But as we pointed out, lowering the potential for change, i.e. consumption, is as important as lowering the weight.

The Use of Will

Because of the counterintuitive nature of these directives the use of Will cannot jut be applied indiscriminately, but must be used cautiously & applied on the right element.

1) Of course exert Will to begin the Diet.

2) Then, counter intuitively, exert Will to slow down the Weight loss – so it wont Bounce too hard – back up the way it came

3) Next exert Will to slow the speed of the ascent of the Bounce – again counter intuitive. Why not Will to stop the ascent? The Person is fighting a losing battle. Save your energy for the alternate Bounce. Dont waste energy going against the tide. Also using Will to slow the ascent means: Dont beat yourself up for succumbing to the Ascent from the Bounce. It is a natural mathematical process, which is difficult to resist without an enormous energy expenditure. It is unnecessarily difficult, and potentially unhealthy as well. Take it easy by aligning with the Directional Momentum. Slowing the speed slows the Rise in the Deviations, which slows the potential for changes, which is what we want.

4) Next Will to damp the top of the cycle. Sure youve lost 20 pounds and put back 18, but youre still gaining ground. Slowing the Rise and then Damping the Top are possible w/Conscious Intent. (It is never too late. Regain control when you can rather than giving it up for lost.)

C. A Summary of the Mechanism

Now Will to Begin Dieting, Practicing, Writing, whatever you want. Again this new Direction will pull up all the Directionals. Because of this new Excitement related to the Boredom Principle, there will be a tendency to get carried away. Again once the Momentum begins use Will to Damp the Downward Velocity so that the inevitable Bounce will also be damped. And the cycle begins again. Damp the Down and resist the Up. Slowing the speed of the down & up saves energy & achieves a greater long-term stability for change. The First Chart shows the fallacy of a quick change & the dangers of the Bounce. The second chart shows the advantage of the gradual change and the permanence of the results.

Applies to changing diet, drinking, or smoking habits

This same mechanism applies to changing your diet, drinking, or smoking. As an Example: youve eaten donuts for breakfast every morning for 10 years and your doctor tells you to quit eating donuts because they consist of the very worst kind of fat & sugar combined with very little nutritional content. Believing your Doctor you immediately quit eating donuts. Unfortunately your Body has developed a physical Data Stream to conform to your diet. It is still producing the internal liquids that will digest and extract the maximum amount of nutrition from these donuts. These liquids crave (demand) to be used. Simultaneously the Bounce is about to occur because of your rapid abrupt end – like slamming on your brakes – Whiplash. You eat double the Doughnuts the next day to make up for those that you missed. And youre worse off than when you started.

Summary of ineffective & effective patterns

With each day that you skip a donut the donut fluids build and with it a physical need for a donut. The Directionals finally Bounce – sending up multiple urges, which build and build, until they are manifested. If however you put on your brakes slowly and semi irregularly to cushion the stop – the car stops easily & Aunt Matilda is not thrown into the front seat and you dont worry about Whiplash. Therefore slowly damping the Donut urge over a longer time will allow your Body to deal with excess acids appropriately as well as the dynamics of the Data Stream Momentum. The Bounce from the Splash is minimized and one doesnt gorge on donuts, but gradually gives them up over time – to be replaced by healthier fare – perhaps fruit & vegetables. Further your Body now knows how to digest the produce properly because she has been given enough time to adjust her excretions. In summary: Slow the Splash & Bounce while Damping the Top to maximize the potential for long-term Change.

D. Connecting to the Edge of Chaos

Life & Death Urges and the Pulse of Life

What are the Life and Death Urges but a response to the Edge of Chaos. The Life Urge pushes one into the chaotic realm while the Death Urge pushes one into the ordered realm. {See Boredom Principle Notebook.} The Life Urge moves one to greater potentials for movement because the Data exceeds one deviation, while the Death Urge limits the potential for movement by shrinking the Deviations because the Data is less than one deviation. There are self-limiting mechanisms that restrict the downward or upward movement of the Deviation, i.e. the Potential, and the Average Z-Score, the Tendency. {See 4.4 The Pulse of Life from the Boredom Principle Notebook.}

The Urges operate independently upon many levels

Let it be stated that the Life & Death Urges can be operating independently upon many different levels of the Derivatives. As an example during a period of deep chaos in one part of one's life, for instance a death or separation in the family, one clings to order in the rest of one's life. Conversely when one's life falls into a deep routine, one becomes restless for change. Closer to the point, although Pop culture is continually changing it might be perceived that the changes are of a similar kind. Without quite being able to put a finger on it, the Seeker might sense an emptiness in his stomach as if he is hungry for more, when he sees a swirl of change before him. His higher Derivatives are all approaching zero while the lower Derivatives are fluctuating like crazy. He takes a draught of Historical Culture and comes away refreshed because of its complexity upon so many levels. His higher Derivatives are aroused and stimulated. He takes another drink.

All personal perception

This state however is entirely perceptual. The complexity exists everywhere. A specialist upon Pop Culture perceives endless variety. Some information processors need more than others. Certain ears need to be caressed by subtle harmonies and rhythms, while certain eyes need to be massaged by beautiful patterns of every hue or perhaps erotic images. Certain brains need to be tickled with intense computational complexity. Some bodies need to be challenged to the limits of their capacities. Each individual has his own computational needs.
